Issues and Trends of Violence and safety of Nurses who work in Emergency Accident Units

Abstract

This article aims to identify the situation of violent trends and safety of nurses who work at accident and emergency department, and develop guidelines for violence prevention nurses. In the current situation, it is increasing number of patients in the accident and emergency department causing significant congestion. The problem is that the proportion of doctors and
nurses is not sufficient for the number of clients, insufficient service area of the accident and emergency department, problems with coordination among officers and between officers and clients resulting in the delay in nursing services and treatment. This makes it impossible to respond to patients’ needs in a timely manner leading to clients dissatisfaction and violence. Therefore, in the accident and emergency department, there are 3 aspects of impact on health team personnel: (1) physical violence resulting in injuries or death of health care personnel; (2) psychological violence such as feeling angry or tension; and (3) damage of medical equipment. According to personnel safety goals: SIMPLE Thailand 2018, the safety from  comprehensive public health operations should be ensured, both the safety of service recipients and safety of health team personnel (Patient and Personnel Safety or 2P Safety) 2018-2021. It matches the goals of E: Environment and Working Conditions (E3: Workplace Violence, violence in the workplace) with guidelines for solving and preventing nurses from working safely in the accident and emergency department, namely organizing the security system of the accident department and emergency and management of nursing practice systems. Thus, it can be used to plan solutions and prevent nurses from work safely in the accident and emergency department; and be able to deal appropriately with violent situations that may occur in the department
