Abstract

This research focuses on developing an innovative animation to prevent depression in Muslim elderly people by using the spiritual dimension of human security, which is found to be a major problem in the dependent elderly group. This research was tested through village health volunteers (VHVs) and elderly people in the southern border provinces.

The results of the study found that none of the elderly who participated in the project developed depression, and both the elderly and VHVs had a high level of satisfaction because the activities were consistent with the Muslim way of life, such as reading the Quran, praying, performing halaqah, and listening to the 99 names of Allah. These activities can be grouped according to the spiritual dimension of 3 aspects: (1) Giving meaning and purpose in life, (2) Relationships with other people and supernatural powers, and (3) Hope. This research has applied the knowledge to expand the results to public health personnel, community leaders, religious leaders, and nursing students through organizing a workshop to promote the use of animation and applications to prevent depression. In addition, the knowledge was used to develop a textbook on prevention of depression in the elderly according to the Muslim way of life, which has been disseminated at the national level.

The results of this research help create mental and social stability. In the southern border provinces and can be further developed into appropriate technology for the community, helping to reduce the burden on the public health system and creating positive impacts on the economy and society in the long term.
