Factors associated to decision of Bariatric surgery in obese patients, Vachira Phuket Hospital

Background: Nowadays, there are many ways to lose weight. Surgical obesity treatment is the most effective treatment that can control body weight for a long time. And greatly reduce the chance of co-morbidities
Objective: To study the personal characteristics of obese patients who decide to undergo bariatric surgery, Vachira Phuket Hospital, and to study factors affecting the decision to undergo bariatric surgery of obese patients, Vachira Phuket Hospital
Method: This study is descriptive research. The sample consists of 93 obese patients treated at the hospital's obesity clinic through bariatric surgery from April to June 2024. Participants were randomly selected for interviews using a questionnaire divided into four parts: personal information, predisposing factors, enabling factors, and reinforcing factors.
Result: The findings indicate that the majority of obese patients opting for bariatric surgery are female, aged 21-30 years, with a bachelor's degree or equivalent education, single, working as wage earners, earning a monthly income between 15,001-20,000 baht, and have no chronic illnesses. Regarding predisposing factors, their knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs are predominantly at a high level (78.5%, 83.9%, and 62.4%, respectively). Moreover, enabling factors and reinforcing factors are also rated highly (97.8% and 94.6%, respectively).
Conclusions: Healthcare personnel should design information programs tailored to provide accurate information to obese patients contemplating bariatric surgery. This includes preparing patients before and after surgery to enhance understanding, reduce anxiety, mitigate complications, and improve the effectiveness of surgical obesity treatment in the future.
