Abstract

Introduction: Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a critical factor affecting health and work performance, especially in hospital buildings where both staff and patients are continuously exposed. Poor indoor air conditions, including thermal discomfort and airborne contaminants, may lead to adverse health effects such as Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). Therefore, assessing IAQ and its related factors is essential.

Objectives: To investigate indoor air quality (IAQ), factors affecting indoor air quality, and health impacts among workers in hospital buildings in Phuket Province.

Methodology: Indoor air quality (IAQ) parameters were assessed by measuring thermal comfort indicators, including temperature and relative humidity, and air contaminant parameters, including carbon dioxide (CO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter less than 10 microns in diameter (PM10), and particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5). Building environmental characteristics were surveyed, and health-related data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The study population consisted of healthcare workers employed in hospital buildings in Phuket Province, including Vachira Phuket Hospital, Thalang Hospital, and Patong Hospital. Data were collected between October 2024 and December 2025. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, were used to summarize the data. Associations between building-related factors, workplace characteristics, and indoor air quality were analyzed using the Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test. Factors associated with Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) were analyzed and presented as Odds Ratios (ORs), 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CIs), and p-values. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.

Results: Building characteristics, environmental conditions, indoor activities, ventilation systems, and both indoor and outdoor pollution sources were significantly associated with indoor air quality (p < 0.05). Healthcare workers reported symptoms related to Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), including eye, nose, and throat irritation, respiratory symptoms, skin symptoms, and neurological symptoms. In addition, certain personal and workplace environmental factors were significantly associated with the occurrence of SBS (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: The findings can be used as guidelines for improving and designing indoor air quality systems in hospital buildings to meet standards and enhance workers’ health and safety.
