Mental health issues among secondary school students during the Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19) pandemic: a cross-sectional study in Bangkok, Thailand

Objective This study aimed to explore the prevalence and related factors of depression and suicide risk among secondary school students during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Bangkok, Thailand.
Material and Methods It is a cross-sectional descriptive study using secondary data from Mental health center 13 collected among students aged 12-18 during April to September 2022. Research tool was PHQA. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, SD). The related factors of depression and suicide risk were analyzed by using Chi-square test and Binary logistic regression and presented with odds ratio an 95% confidence interval (95% CI).
Results 3,418 students were included in this study with age 15.3 (+1.5SD), female 58.6%. The prevalence of depression in all levels was 52.5% and 29.2% of suicide risk. Factors influencing depression and suicide risk were female gender, not living with parents, having mental health history, and overwhelming with stress (p<.001).
Conclusion The prevalence of depression and suicide risk among secondary school students in Bangkok during Covid-19 pandemic was higher than in normal situation. Mental health assessment and interventions should be provided in the time of pandemic.
