Abstract

Objective To compare occurrence of medication error and duration for dispenser service from the pre- and the post-usage of the pharmacy automation system.

Materials and Methods Quasi - Experimental Research on One Group Pretest-Posttest Design was conducted. Sample were number of medications dispensing services in Rajanukul Institute during October 2019 to August 2020, which divided into pre-experiment (October 2019 to January 2020) and post-experiment (April – August 2020). Two types of materials were used i.e., 1) Experimental tool was a pharmacy automated system that connected was received orders from the Hospital Information System (HIS) of Rajanukul Institute (JHOS program) consisted of (1) automatic pill counting machine (2) high risk drug management system and (3) semi-automatic medicine storage and arrangement station system and 2) Measurement tools i.e., prescription, medication error recording form and medication dispensing service time records. Percentage, average and standard deviation were used to analyze general information. Chi-square test was used to compare occurrence of medication error and independent t-test was used to compare duration time of dispenser service between the pre- and the post-usage of the pharmacy automation system.

Results Based on 6,036 prescriptions found that prescription error and pre-dispensing error were both significantly decreased after using the pharmacy automation system (p=.01). Furthermore, average duration time of dispenser service among all process of prescription was significantly difference between pre- and post-usage of the pharmacy automation system (p=.01). It decreased from 6.17 minutes to 3.46 minutes.

Conclusion The pharmacy automation system could reduce prescription error and pre-dispensing error and reduce duration time of dispenser service.
