Parental Concerns About the Oral Health of Individuals with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Case Study of Rajanukul Institute

Objectives To explore parental concerns regarding the oral health problems of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to examine the relationship between these concerns and the parents’ general health.
Materials and Methods The study participants consisted of parents of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities who received dental services at the Rajanukul Institute between December 2020 and January 2022, totaling 293 participants. The research instrument was a questionnaire assessing parental concerns regarding oral health problems among individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the relationship between parental concerns about oral health problems in individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities and the parents’ general well-being was examined using the Chi-square test.
Results The study indicated that parents were most concerned about toothache in individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This was followed by concerns about behavioral changes in these individuals, such as insomnia and irritability, which may be associated with oral pain. The analysis of the relationship between oral health problems in individuals with intellectual disabilities and the general health status or tendency toward mental health problems among parents, using the Chi-square test, revealed no statistically significant association (χ²(3) = 2.031, p = .566).
Conclusion During the COVID-19 pandemic, caregivers expressed concerns about the oral hygiene of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, as it may have contributed to behavioral problems that emerged during that period.
