Main Article Content
Abstract
This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of a behavior modification program based on the Health Belief Model on hypertension preventive behaviors and blood pressure levels among patients with uncontrolled hypertension. The research design was a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 64 patients with uncontrolled hypertension, divided into an experimental group of 32 and a comparison group of 32. The research instruments consisted of: 1) a behavior modification program based on the Health Belief Model, comprising activities to promote health perceptions, health skills training, behavior monitoring, and social support, conducted over 10 weeks; and 2) questionnaires consisting of general information, a Health Belief Model perception scale, a hypertension preventive behavior assessment, and a blood pressure record form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, namely a t-test. The study was conducted from March to May 2026.
The results showed that after participating in the program, the experimental group's mean score of Health Belief Model perceptions increased from 2.56 (S.D. = 0.13) to 3.90 (S.D. = 0.58), and the mean score of hypertension preventive behaviors increased from 2.66 (S.D. = 0.14) to 3.91 (S.D. = 0.65), with statistical significance (p < 0.001). Systolic blood pressure decreased from 151.41 (S.D. = 8.85) to 132.68 mmHg (S.D. = 5.69) (p < 0.001), and diastolic blood pressure decreased from 81.97 (S.D. = 9.97) to 75.88 mmHg (S.D. = 3.21) (p = 0.002). When comparing between groups after the intervention, the experimental group had significantly higher mean scores of perceptions and preventive behaviors than the comparison group and had significantly greater reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure than the comparison group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The behavior modification program based on the Health Belief Model was effective in improving perceptions, preventive behaviors, and blood pressure control in patients with uncontrolled hypertension.
