Factors Associated with Hypoglycemia among Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 at Phothong Hospital, Ang Thong Province

Abstract

Hypoglycemia is an important complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus that adversely affects quality of life and increases the risk of adverse health outcomes and mortality. This retrospective analytical study aimed to determine the frequency of hypoglycemia and identify factors associated with its occurrence among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Medical records of 420 patients receiving care at Phothong Hospital, Ang Thong Province, between January 1 and December 31, 2024, were reviewed. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, and multivariable logistic regression. The study was conducted from June 12 to July 20, 2026.


Hypoglycemia occurred in 20.00% of patients, including 17.14% with non-severe hypoglycemia and 2.86% with severe hypoglycemia. Independent factors associated with hypoglycemia were a previous history of hypoglycemia, impaired renal function (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m²), insulin use, sulfonylurea use, and diabetes duration of 10 years or longer (p < 0.05). In conclusion, patients with these risk factors should receive appropriate risk assessment and close monitoring. As this was a retrospective analytical study, the findings demonstrate associations but cannot establish causal relationships.
