Abstract

Background: Before giving anesthesia, the anesthesia department must halt surgeries to reassess and enhance the patient's health to protect patient safety. By moving resources to safe instances, they also reduce unnecessary costs and hazards, which improves operational efficiency.

Objective: This descriptive study. This study aimed to determine the incidence and causes of surgery cancellation in the Anesthesia Department of Chumphon Khet Udomsakdi Hospital.

Methodology: The sample group consisted of 447 patients who underwent non-emergency surgery between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022. The operation period was June 1, 2023. The instrument used was a data collection form for postponing or canceling surgery in cases where patients had an appointment for surgery in advance. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis, including numbers and percentages.

Results: Results of 477 patients. Most patients are female (55.26 %), most patients are in the age group 61 – 80 years old (40.04 %), next on down are in the age group41–60 years old (24.38 %), Most patients admitted in the hospital (87.90 %), Most ASA Physical status is 2 (41.16 %), next on down are ASA Physical status is 3 (32.44 %), Most of the cases were from department of surgery (54.36 %), next on down are department of orthopedic. The main reasons for cancellation were from patients (46.08 %), and next down were from doctors (44.96 %). Most patients do not have underlying disease (52.35%). Most operation cancellations are colonoscopy (15.44 %), and next on down are Open Reduction and Internal fixation with plate (12.30%).

Conclusion:  According to the data, the majority of the 477 patients are older, mostly female, and moderately anesthetic risk (ASA 2-3), hospitalized primarily for orthopedic and surgical procedures. The need for better preoperative evaluations and communication is highlighted by the almost equal number of cancellations for patient and physician-related causes, with colonoscopy and ORIF procedures being the most affected.
