Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to explore the characteristics and challenges of weaning patients off mechanical ventilation, as well as to develop a nursing program utilizing meditation and music therapy. The study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design, measuring anxiety levels in patients using mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Kantharalak Hospital. The sample consisted of patients aged 18 and over, who were conscious, alert, and able to respond to questions and perform breathing exercises. A total of 100 patients were specifically selected for the study, with 30 participating in the meditation and music therapy program. he research instruments included: The meditation and music therapy program. An anxiety assessment tool for patients on mechanical ventilation. A questionnaire and an observation checklist for assessing relaxation behaviors post-therapy, adapted from Madsen & Madsen (1981). Data were collected through interviews with alert, ventilated patients from September 22, 2023, to December 22, 2023. Descriptive statistics such as percentages and means were used for data analysis, along with Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance to assess changes in anxiety levels. The study found that the meditation and music therapy program significantly reduced anxiety and improved relaxation among patients, demonstrating its potential as an effective nursing intervention for improving the weaning process from mechanical ventilation.
The research findings indicate that mindfulness and music therapy programs are effective in reducing anxiety and stress in patients who have been on mechanical ventilation for an extended period, and can increase the success rate of weaning off the ventilator.
The recommendations from this study suggest that these findings can be applied to develop nursing models in other intensive care units to help patients wean off mechanical ventilation more effectively and safely.
