Factors Influencing People’s Participation in Road Accident Prevention in Nonthaburi Province

Background: Road traffic accidents are a major public health problem causing significant mortality and morbidity worldwide, including in Thailand. Despite continuous governmental policies and preventive measures, accident rates remain high, particularly in Nonthaburi Province, where rapid urbanization and dense traffic contribute to increased risk.
Objective: To examine factors influencing public participation in road traffic accident prevention in Nonthaburi Province.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 983 residents in Nonthaburi Province selected using multistage sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Results: Overall, the level of public participation in road traffic accident prevention was high (mean = 82.59, SD = 6.35). Knowledge (r = .549), perceived susceptibility (r = .599), perceived severity (r = .625), perceived benefits (r = .608), perceived barriers (r = −.329), and cues to action (r = .549) were significantly associated with public participation (p < .001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that perceived severity (Beta=.231), perceived benefits (Beta=.207), perceived susceptibility (Beta=.193), perceived barriers (Beta=-.163), and cues to action (Beta=.138) were significant predictors of public participation, explaining 35.3% of the variance (R² = .353, p< .001).
Conclusion: Perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived susceptibility, perceived barriers, and cues to action are key factors influencing people's participation in road traffic accident prevention. Interventions should prioritize enhancing public awareness of the severity and consequences of road traffic accidents, along with promoting risk perception and supportive behavioral cues to strengthen participation.
