Introduction: Type 2 diabetes is a significant public health problem, particularly regarding blood sugar control. Many patients continue to experience difficulty achieving glycemic control Health literacy is a crucial factor that influences self-care behaviors and health outcomes. However, Takua Thung hospital has found that many patients are still unable to achieve their target blood sugar levels. Therefore, it is necessary to study the related factors in order to develop more appropriate and effective care guidelines.
Objective: To examine the association between personal factors, health literacy, and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: This study employed an analytical cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 208 patients with type 2 diabetes. Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, a health literacy assessment, and HbA1c data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and multiple logistic regression analysis.
Results: The study found that 54.8% of patients had uncontrolled blood glucose levels (HbA1c ≥ 7%) and 66.8% had low levels of health literacy. Patients with low health literacy were significantly more likely to have poor glycemic control than those with high health literacy (AOR = 3.52, 95% CI = 1.88–6.61, p < 0.001). Furthermore, patients with insufficient income, those who had previously participated in group health education sessions, and those with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m² were significantly more likely to have uncontrolled blood glucose levels.
Conclusion: Health literacy was significantly associated with glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, the development of health education activities aimed at enhancing health literacy skills should be promoted within the healthcare system.
