Background: Road traffic injuries are a major cause of death among children worldwide and in Thailand. One important factor is the lack of appropriate use of child restraint systems (CRS). Despite existing legislation in Thailand, limitations in parental knowledge, perception, and attitudes remain, particularly in Phuket Province, where traffic density is high.
Objective: To examine the levels of knowledge, perception, attitudes, and behaviors regarding child restraint system use among parents in Phuket Province and to determine the relationships between these factors and CRS use behavior.
Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 419 parents who had children aged 0–12 years and owned a private car in Phuket Province. Participants were selected using multistage sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis.
Results: Most parents had a moderate level of knowledge regarding CRS use (58.2%), whereas perception and attitudes were mostly at a high level (64.4% and 59.2%, respectively). Overall CRS use behavior was at a high level (46.8%). Perception (r = .447, p < .001) and attitudes (r = .561, p < .001) were significantly positively associated with CRS use behavior, while knowledge was not significantly associated with behavior. Multiple regression analysis revealed that attitudes and perception significantly predicted CRS use behavior, explaining 36.4% of the variance.
Conclusion: Parental attitudes and perception are important factors influencing CRS use behavior. Promoting awareness and positive attitudes toward CRS use may enhance child passenger safety and contribute to the prevention of road traffic injuries among children.
