Factors Influencing Compliance with Traffic Regulations for Road Accident Prevention among Motorcycle Food and Goods Delivery Riders in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area

Abstract

Introduction: Road traffic accidents remain a major global public health challenge, causing substantial mortality, disability, and socioeconomic losses. In Thailand, motorcyclists account for one of the highest rates of road traffic fatalities worldwide. The rapid expansion of the platform-based economy has led to a significant increase in food and parcel delivery workers (riders), who rely on motorcycles as their primary mode of transportation. Working under time constraints, income-based incentives, and demanding delivery schedules may increase risky riding behaviors and reduce compliance with traffic regulations. Identifying factors associated with traffic rule compliance is therefore essential for developing effective interventions to reduce road traffic accidents among this high-risk occupational group.

Objective: To examine the factors influencing compliance with traffic rules for road accident prevention among motorcycle-based food and parcel delivery workers in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region.

Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 448 motorcycle-based food and parcel delivery workers who had worked for at least three months. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression.

Results: Overall, 66.5% of participants demonstrated a moderate level of compliance with traffic rules. Multiple linear regression analysis identified income (β = −0.185, p < 0.001), knowledge of traffic rules (β = 0.153, p = 0.001), and social support (β = 0.192, p = 0.001) as significant predictors of traffic rule compliance. These variables jointly explained 15.1% of the variance in compliance (R = 0.389, R² = 0.151, p < 0.001).

Conclusion: Income, knowledge of traffic rules, and social support significantly influence traffic rule compliance among motorcycle-based food and parcel delivery workers in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. Strengthening road safety education, enhancing social support systems, and implementing targeted occupational safety measures may improve compliance with traffic regulations and contribute to reducing road traffic accidents among riders.
